The origin of Ving Tsun kuen is vague and legendary. This way of fighting
is very popular over the world and it is extremely difficult to distinguish
the authentic from the forged motives.
The intrinsic structure of the system alludes to few sure facts
that place the system within the historic time:
- The system rose on the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries
because it resembled orthodox kung fu systems of that time.
- The system developed in the south of China because it was practiced
mainly with hand technics performed in high stances. It is a characteristic
feature to Fujian province.
- The founders of the system were women. Although kung fu from
the south of China is based on physical strength, Ving Tsun kuen emphases
on deftness in footwork. Speed trumps physical strength so the system is
suitable for people with the weaker structure of the body.
- Sifu Wong Shun Leung connected the rise of the system with
martial arts from Xinjiao Monastery in Fujian province.
In accordance with the research currently conducted in China,
the system was developed in 1790-1820 by a woman called Yim Ving Tsun (Yan
Yongchun in Beijing dialect), the daughter of kung fu Master called Yim
Yee (Yan Si) who came from Quanzhou in Fujian province.
When Yim's family moved from Quanzhou to Liancheng, Yim Ving
Tsun peeped a fighting of crane against snake. That event was the
main inspiration to the woman in further considerations and developing
of the family kung fu system. After her marriage with Leung Bok Chan (Liang
Botao) the young couple opened a school of kung fu in Liancheng. After
death of Master Yim Yee they moved to Jiangxi province for a short period
of time. Yim Ving Tsun's husband came from that region. Then they moved
to Zhaoqing from Guandong province. They lived by teaching kung fu everywhere.
They named their system with Yim's name i.e. Ving Tsun kuen. It still didn't
include weapons' technics in its repertoire.
In 1816 Leung family exchanged technics of the system with actor
of the Cantonese opera called Wong Wah Bo (Huang Bohua), who had specialized
in fighting with a long pole. About 1830 Wong Wah Bo passed along the technics
of his system to a chemist and herbalist called Leung Jun (Liang Zan).
The existence of the latter is supplied with documentary evidence.
The historical origin of Ving Tsun kung fu begins about 1840
in Guandong province and in a town called Foshan placed near Guangchow
(Canton). By that time the system was completely developed. Master Leung
Jun gained reputation of the great Ving Tsun fighter in his province.
We know the names of only four of his students. Two of them were
his sons, Leung Bik and Leung Chun. It conforms the rule of family character
of teaching and developing Ving Tsun kung fu. The only student who was
not Master's relation was called Chan Wah Shun. Because of his size and
strength he subdued the school after the death of his Master. He brought
about ceasing teaching Ving Tsun kuen by Leungs family and finally he forced
the Master's sons to emigrate from Foshan.
He admitted only several students throughout his life time. The
last student of him was a boy called Yip Kai Man who descended from one
of the distinguished families in Foshan.
Yip Man taught directly only few students throughout his
all life. Wong Shun Leung was one of the most eminent students and
the most distinguished continuator of the art after the Master's death.
Wong Shun Leung became one of the most outstanding personage of
Ving Tsun kuen. He influenced Master Yip Man to modificate and introduce
new technics into the system. It was Wong Shun Leung who must be credited
for the structural analyses of the Ving Tsun weapons i.e. long pole and
pair of butterfly knifes.
Many people over the world write or say lots of unproved
words to boost themselves. But it was well known who was the Number One
in Yip Man's school in Hong Kong. It was astonishing that even Yip Man's
students hired blusterers who would finally defeat unconquerable Wong Shun
Leung. But they never ever did.
Contrary to his own teacher, Master Wong Shun Leung taught willingly
everyone no matter what color of their skin or what their descent was.
In 1985 under the auspices of Wong Shun Leung, his kung fu school rose
in cooperation with his students in Poland. Master Wong looked after the
school personally from 1993 until his untimely death. Sifu Janusz Szymankiewicz
is Master Wong's direct student and qualified teacher. He was the last
student whom Sifu Wong Shun Leung passed along the complete Ving Tsun system.
With Master Wong approval, in order to differentiate from many other Ving
Tsun schools the name of the school is Wong Shun Leung Fighting System.
