AIX Tip of the Week

AIX 4.3 Withdrawn From Marketing

Audience: All

Date: June 10, 2003

As most everyone is aware, AIX 4.3 will be withdrawn from marketing on June 30, 2003. In addition, there are a number of AIX LPP's being withdrawn. For more information, see

http://usmweb.boulder.ibm.com/CD//USMAL/9/903055.htm

AIX 4.3 will continue to be supported through the end of 2003. Support beyond 2003 will require a special contract. Contact your local rep for more information.

The replacements for AIX 4.3 are either AIX 5.1 or 5.2. In general, almost everything is portable from AIX 4.3 to 5L, except 64 bit applications. The following URL contains a detailed Migration Guide from AIX 4.3 to 5L

All else being equal, I would recommend AIX 5.2 over 5.1. My reasons include new/improved AIX 5.2 functions, and because the AIX 5.2 product life cycle extends beyond that for 5.1.The new/improved AIX 5.2 functions are listed at:
